Decent product but needs an AC adapter, July 22, 2005

I have been using two Rat Zappers for a few months now, with mixed results. They seem to work most reliably when the batteries are absolutely fresh. In particular, ordinary alkaline batteries seem to be good for one or two kills only. The recommended (and considerably more expensive) lithium batteries last a little longer, but the claim of “3 months or 15 rodent kills” seems to be marketing hype. Even with the optional “Rat Pack,” the lethality diminishes rapidly after a few kills. Without absolutely new batteries, I often find the kill light will be flashing but nothing will be in the trap, suggesting that a rat received a non-lethal shock. That is a rodent that has now been trained to never set foot in such a trap again.

What this product desperately needs is an AC adapter, so it can deliver consistently lethal shocks where an outlet is available. Alternatively, some better mechanism for determining when it’s time to replace the batteries would be helpful, besides trying to judge spark length or the relative brightness of the LED indicator.

I have found traditional snap traps to be more consistently effective for rat control, though I still use the Rat Zappers in areas where snap traps would be a danger to pets or children. Just be prepared to spend a fortune on batteries.

Rat Zapper is Fantastic!, November 10, 2004

My dog had been chasing a roof rat around in the yard for 2 weeks, she couldn’t catch him cause roof rats like to hang out up in the trees. The instructions on the zapper say to put food in it and not turn it on for a few days. Let the rat get comfortable around the new object. I have no patience and I put it out in the shed and turned it on. The second night I had my dead rat. Bought 2 zappers for the warehouse at work and in a couple weeks we killed the entire family. 2 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 babies. No one is eating the food now so we think we have them all. Expect more will move in when it gets cold though.

The zapper is not only the most humane way to kill rats and mice it is the most effective and there is no blood and guts. Well worth the money.

It really works!, December 29, 2005

I set it up the evening I bought it. I found that a mouse was caught the next morning. Reset it before I went to work. Got another one after I was back! After Zapper killed 11 of them, I declared my house is rodent-free! How can I tell? I scattered some dog food around, all of them were still there days later. I didn’t bother to figure which one was mouse and which one was rat. But, some of them were quite big.

I have a tip to offer. After several kills, the Zapper may get the smell of the dead rodents. The remaining ones won’t come in any more. You have to clean it up using vinegar and dish detergent as documented on their web site. Those stupid rodents will come back in again.

Catches MORE than pesky mosquitoes… read on:, June 3, 2007

Recently purchased three of these, and tested one right away. I found that it caught many more BENEFICIAL insects than mosquitoes. Not really eager to box up and return-ship the three units, I removed the light bulbs from the test trap and ran it again for a few days. The difference was phenomenal! Not a single good bug, but only the pesky mosquitoes. Have since installed the remaining two traps, and am in the process of searching for additionals to place around the yard, so I can discontinue using our two Mosquito Magnets.

The only slightly-misleading comment in the description of this item is that it can be used indoors and outside. If used outdoors, it MUST be in a covered area, such as a porch, under house eaves, etc. to keep out rain. The description should note this. However, I am extremely pleased with the performance thus far of this product, and will be looking to sell our current two Mosquito Magnets when I find enough replacements for them. Dyna Trap units are much less expensive to run, and much less maintenance as well. Now I will just have to construct some sort of waterproof shelters for the Dyna Traps, so I can place them remotely around the yard.

Would recommend this product highly, to anyone like me who cannot go outside without being attacked by the bloodthirsty little pests!

Seems to be working great, April 16, 2007

Purchased one of these to try and get ahold of the mosquito population in our back yard. Have been running it for a few days now, and its already filled with quite a few mosquitoes and other gnats. Quiet operation.

Only downside I can see is that the bugs are trapped in the unit but are alive until they starve or dehydrate. So emptying the unit will be an interesting task while trying not to let any of them go again.

I’ll update this posting if I have any problems with the unit, or if it becomes less successful as the season goes on. But so far it seems to be working very well, and costs significantly less per month than running the other units that require octenol or propane to work. I can live with /month in electricity.

The unit is still plugging away. I’ve had to take it apart a couple of times over the last few years to clean gunk out of the motor, but otherwise it continues to work.

As for its successful use as a trap for mosquitos… I find it catching many more moths and flies than anything else. In the spring it always catches mosquitos by the pound. But once early summer starts the mosquitos seem to either get smarter, or emerge as a different breed that aren’t attacked to the unit as much. It still catches mosquitos, but not nearly to the extent as it does first thing in the spring.

Cleaning the trap is somewhat interesting. The trap basically holds the bugs until they die of what I would assume is dehydration. However, its continually catching new insects, so cleaning it can be tricky. I’ve found the best way to clean it is to have a garbage back next to the unit, release the bottom “insect holder” without turning the unit off, and dump the insect holder into the bag swiftly, then tying the bag shut immediately so the bugs that are still alive won’t escape. If you’re quick, nothing, or very few should escape.

And, I tend to be quite lazy about cleaning it. It only fills to the point where it requires me to clean it every couple of weeks.

So to sum up, its a great insect catcher. But don’t believe it’ll catch all of your summer blood-sucking problems. It appears to work *ok*, but I still have to wear insect repellent when I’m outside.

A backyard saver, May 6, 2007

This is the second one of these we have purchased. It is probably the best mosquito trap I have tried and I have tried many. I broke the first one by dropping it on the concrete pool deck, up until that time it had worked perfectly for 3 years. I was very glad to find Amazon had this item. After we broke the first we couldn’t find another one anywhere so we tried other products. None even came close to the DynaTrap(the original one was called the Black Hole). I have recommended this item to neighbors wanting to enjoy their backyards.

Best Flyswatter, Ever!, March 16, 2007

This is a deeply satisfying product. Not only does it kill flies,

it does so with a bright flash and the crack of electricity.

What could be better?

True, the battery door is not particularly well secured, but it’s

not a big deal.

There are actually three grids in the paddle. The two outer ones

have large mesh that allows insects to pass inside, while the

middle one uses much smaller mesh. Voltage is applied between

the center grid and both outer grids.

I haven’t made an effort to poke my fingers into the grids, but it

looks like you could give yourself a shock…if you worked at it.

My advice: Don’t.

Excellent for pantry moths, August 7, 2006

If you get infested with pantry moths – and anyone who owns a pet that eats seed likely has been or is infested – this works like a charm on them. I doubt the current is strong enough for large insects, but I’ve killed thousands of moths, numerous mosquitos and even a couple of small earwigs.

If there’s a flaw or flaws, it’s that the batteries die quickly and the cover for the battery housing does not stay latched. I had to tape mine shut.

Bottom line – I can’t get fumigated for these moths due to small pets and my cats. I have to do daily combat with them to keep their numbers low, and I couldn’t do it without this crazy electric tennis racket!

By the way, my primary weapon against these little brown beasts is the Bugzooka. Excellent product.

Practice Your Backhand on pesky pests!!, November 20, 2007

These little deals really work, and well at that! Really large bugs like say a Palmetto bug-(aka Giant-Roaches;) you may have to hold them down with the zapper for a moment to make sure their good and fried ;-)

But small-average size bugs ie: flies,spiders,mosquitoes etc.. are pretty much toast on contact:)

What can I say- it’s a replacement lamp for the bug trap.

It fits. It works. It’s not hard to install.

It’s a little bit spendy for what you get, but hey, it works.

No more mosquitoes in my screenporch. :-)

Arrived quickly but in poor condition., August 28, 2011

This product was attractively priced and arrived in an intact box. Problem is, the net itself was misformed and interferes with the flow of insects to the rear of the net. Mosquito Magnet charges enough for their products & in my humble opinion should keep a closer eye on quality control

What can I say – it’s a net. It came with no rips, tears, or holes large enough to allow getaways. It fits in the Mosquito Magnet; it catches the bugs… what more could you ask for?!

Lousy product. One swatter the battery compartment was broken. The other swatter, once the batteries are installed the clip to the battery compartment will not stay closed. I would not buy from this company again. Cheap, cheap cheap!!!

Black Widows Are Now “None More Black”, June 12, 2008

In the summer time, the place I live is infested with black widows everywhere. They balloon into the house, build webs around the bulkhead, doors, etc. We’re talking infestation folks. Last thing I need is a guest to sit too close to a widow tending a missed eggsack and deliver a bite.

I grew frustrated using my stove lighter, rubber bands, and Formula 409 was totally useless Against widows. One fully grown widow seemed to even chuckle and – dare I say – give me her version of the bird as she crawled OUT OF A FROTHING POOL OF 409. Inconceivable!

Then my girlfriend’s mom gave me this zapper for my b-day, ironically, because she knows I love insects (???).

Anyway, I offensively left it in the corner to dust-over until I realized this would be perfect for widows (even though I’m strongly against killing non-poisonous spiders).

Well, the light bulb went off and, by the Power of Grayskull, I launched a full assault on the young and old widows around the house. I simply turned the Zapper on and first blocked their escape back into their hidey-hole then slowly moved zapper towards the middle of the web where they were. Eventually, they run out of web and the Zapper’s Fury crumples them into a smoldering ball at my feet. A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

A-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I bought this little goodie as a lark and was surprised to learn what kind of a zap and spark one could get from tiny little batteries …..

Certainly not the tool to have if you have any kids …. OR .. if you have any co-ordination problems and may hit yourself or anyone around you … Touch the metal parts of the swatter and you will very quickly learn what religion is all about with stinging ZAP and a spark ….

Flying bugs are fried immediately … so if you have any fear or allergy of wasps or bees … well then this baby is for you …

Oh yes … for those of you with an imagination the Amazing Bug Zapper is as close to Darth’s light sword as you can legallay get … LOL

Keeping the sport in bug zapping, this handy dandy handheld model takes it to competitive levels. The more passive models may be as effective, but are they as FUN? Can you feel SATISFIED? Can you COMPETE?

Please note that this is not a safe toy with a child around (and they are going to be soooo tempted, particularly if a younger sibling is close). Definitely a must have for the barbeque boy, porch princess, and all those Happy Campers. Hint: You probably will need more than one.
